The first WUF was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 from 29 April to 3 May.

The Theme of the First Session of WUF was “Sustainable Urbanization”

With twice as many participants registering than expected, the first ever World Urban Forum concluded after a week of successful deliberations. From Mayors to slum dwellers the participants, about 1,200 people from over 80 countries attended the meeting.
